Are the Ministry of Justice right to abandoned an inquiry into the rise of secretive Sharia councils?

Will this decision give rise to an increase in these illegal Sharia councils?

notasyoung - rein in - saffy's not calling you sad, it's the situation which is sad, when people make statements on the basis of assumptions. A lot of the anger about different cultures is because of lack of understanding (and I don't mean to direct this at you personally either, it's a generalisation - through my work I know that many people are scared of what looks different to their own cultural norms).
Can everyone cool a bit, please? This is a good thread with learning and sharing to be done, it's a good post from AOG generating a lot of discussion.

To all the "they come over here and try to force their ways on us", I'm going to spell this out slowly...

Sharia Law WILL NEVER SUPLLANTS ENGLISH LAW.

The law of the land will always be English law. You cannot a divorce under Sharia Law. You will still have to go through the formal process of divorcing through the courts.

Sharia Law can be used in addition to existing laws to settle disputes, much in the same way as mediation services.

Sharia Law has bugger all to so with the rest of us. If Muslims want to conduct their lives under the edicts of Sharia councils, then fill ya boots - but they must understand that whenever their rules/decisions come into conflict with existing British Law, British law will ALWAYS take precedent.

So a) why are people being so obtuse and about this and b) why isn't the same level of rhetoric directed to Jewish courts?

Is it ignorance or stupidity. How are the pills?

Safiya I have read the Koran which is not the same as the Sharia but as I understand it if your husband wants a divorce he only needs to say " I divorce you three times " and that's it out you go. On the other hand you can not do the same . You would need his consent.
What puzzles me if you are satisfied with a Sharia marriage why did you also go through with an English marriage?. Many non Muslims just live together so why didn't you. ? Finally I am sure the prophet Muhammed (PBUH ) would not be happy today if he saw how his teachings have been debased.
I am not criticising you , just puzzled. My own daughter isn't married to her partner and is legally in the same position being married under Sharia.

also if i wished to divorce him and applied to the Sharia Council if he agrees then i forfeit the dowry and its finished and done with...if he doesnt agree the Council can issue divorce....


I also didnt say I had english marriage... i made a comment about english divorce in brackets in my first post solely because ive had a similar conversation somewhere else and because i didnt mention this i was set upon by a few people saying i didnt know 'the rules' .... i just thought i would point it out first in case that happened... i also said the only thing english marriage means to me is to be able to put married and wife on legal forms.... i never said i was or wasnt married the english way as thats my business and also wasnt what the thread was about.....
