I suspect the attitudes to rioting differ between all sorts of people.
The common denominator appears to be anger, frustration and a feeling of economic and political impotence that was probably common between the 'underclass' of Leicester in 1814 and those in Tottenham 2011.

I wouldn't know if multicultural was a factor in this latest set of riots. However it does seem to me that some riots can be seen to have been triggered by understandable maltreatment, whilst others seem to be started more as an excuse for looting. I'm still looking for a plausible explanation of the Enfield, Walthamstow and Brixton riots. Even the events preceding the Tottenham riot seems highly suspect as an explanation.
The other three - incitement by these behind scene shysters who are ultimately cowards, aided by our technological ability to quickly communicate now.......
After all, a joke can go around the world in less than a day - have tested that one! So the ability to put 500 or 2000 looters, troublemakers and whatever scum on the streets hellbent on causing anarchy must be a doddle now. Thats why I hope the police and MI5 really get stuck in on these shady organisers.

I see your point, but after the inital 'flame up' I suspect an awful lot of the rioters were more looters and trouble-makers than protestors.
And Enfield???
What the hell have they got to complain about in Enfield? A mate of mine used to live there, so I know the area well...it's not exactly 'deprived' (unless there were areas I didn't know about).

Multiculturism had nothing to do with. It was a bunch of so called "deprived" citizens out to make as much trouble for the police and law abiding citizens as they could. They are nothing but thugs and criminals. All were so "deprived" that not one was without an IPhone, IPad , Blackberry or mobile phone. They obviously had enough funds to pay for these items, or did they loot them?

mind you perhaps many who did riot centuries ago, may well have had just cause, i mean if you were dirt poor, being trodden on by your so called masters or betters, wouldn't you want to say or do something about it. Those recently are not poor and downtrodden, but out to cause havoc, and have a go at the police, and some just jump on the bandwagon and go along to see what they can steal.
Thank you for your ancient history time-lines Gromit.
I can only talk of 'in my life time'
And the only one is 1936 - Battle of Cable Street, (London, England)
This is reminiscent to the 'Lefts' attitude towards the EDL's marches, of today.
This was the communists attacking a Legal march by Oswald Mosley, who incidentally was supported by the police.
It was reported the demonstrators fought with sticks, rocks, chair legs and other improvised weapons. Rubbish, rotten vegetables and the contents of chamber pots were thrown at the police by women in houses along the street.
Mosley agreed to abandon the march to prevent bloodshed. Several members of the police were kidnapped by demonstrators. Around 100 people were injured including police, women and children.
No mention of police cars set on fire, buses set on fire, buildings set on fire, shops looted, ambulance not allowed entry etc.though.
Ah, those balmy pre-multi immigration days.
