Why the change? Croydon was such a nice place once, and to see women fighting in the street, if it ever happened was very, very rare.

At first I was not going to answer your sarcastic request, but decided that I would do a 'one off', rather than get the usual demand "why aren't you answering my question".
/// What steps are you taking? ///
As much as I am capable of these days, and that is to air my feelings on a modern social network site.
/// Perhaps we could follow your lead? ///
Judging by some of the answers I very much doubt it, seeing that some of you have been brought up in this present age and know no difference, you have no idea whatsoever of how things once were.

AOG
I refer back to football hooligans.
Would you not agree that the issue of hooliganism is all it past?
Also - I would suggest that unless you grew up in the East End of London, or some of the less salubrious areas of North and South London, your idea of the green and pleasant land might be a little skewed.
And Gromit...I think you're being a little unfair. Give AOG his due here - he has not mentioned race on this thread at all, so we should not assume that is what he's referring to.

/// These bygone days that yielded our most notorious criminal gangs and criminals sound idyllic. ///
What one has to ask is why hardly no one these days ever remembers the names of the numerous gangs and criminals?
I have read of many stabbings and shootings on our present day streets, but for the life of me can't remember the names of these criminals.
But back in the past we had jack the Ripper, Dr Crippen, his crime now let me see, oh yes he murdered his wife, and shootings on the street? Ruth Ellis of course, she shot and killed her boyfriend.
How many stabbings, shootings and other murders on the streets of the Capital alone this year?
There were 2,030 homicides alone in the 32 boroughs of London between 2000 and 2012, and up to 1,000 people a month are victims of knife crime in London.

Gromit - //He keeps asking what has changed from his day. Mass Immigration is the answer he is seeking from someone else, so he can say he didn't bring it up. //
I think you are being unfair here.
I usually disagree with AOG on most of his views, and he with mine, but one thing you could never accuse him (or me!) of, is fishing for a response by dropping oblique clues.
If AOG believes that immigration is the fault of the situation in his OP, then you can trust him to have mentioned it right at the start - rather than hoping someone else will bring it up - that is fundamentally not his style!

/// You come across as very sheltered, AOG. Have you actually witnessed life or just read about it in The Daily Mail? ///
I have witnessed more in my life than you will ever be able to witness, even after you have taken your head out of the sand and removed your rose tinted specs.
Care to swop life stories?

Thank you for that sp, but if Gromit thinks he can goad me he has another think coming.
/// I refer back to football hooligans. ///

Not completely in the past but a very high level of improvement along with racism.
But then even in the past there was no hooligan element in sport, we all went along to watch our particular team play, I can't even remember opposing supporters being kept apart, the only segregation there was in my local ground was 'The Boy's Corner' but even if a boy could not get into that place, the adults would pass the child over their heads, and down to the front.
No seating in those days you understand?
