/// But I cannot help observing the grotesque irony that in the capital of Germany this deluded woman should have spoken of how ‘England’s fascistic side’ affected the British view of Germany and World War II. ///
/// She even had the nerve to grumble about being ‘completely brainwashed’ by films she saw in her childhood showing the British ‘being marvellous and beating the Nazis’. ///
You can't get any more anti-British than that.

But another book with reading is 'The Progressive Patriot' by Billy Bragg. It would be hard to find a more patriotic book by a left winger
Many 'lefties' do like to *** off their country of course as do many 'righties' Bot sure anyone side has the upper hand in that regard //
A balanced view from one of the consistent voices of reason on this section.

Naomi - //Astonishing how many voices of reason come from the left. //
Indeed.
Seven years ago, I listened to Tony Benn speaking at the Political Tent at Glastonbury Festival, which these days encourages at least as many rich Tories as it does poor Socialists.
The entire audience sat there in rapt silence, heads nodding, as Mr Benn came out with observation after observation, opinion after opinion, and no-one could possible argue with the utter common-sense and reason that underpinned everything he said on that day. An experience I have never forgotten.

Svejk - //I'd suggest they have developed, for some inexplicable reason, a superior attitude to us mere mortals.
Hence, the sneery, condescending attitude they display. Perhaps 'we' confuse their contempt for their fellow countrymen with contempt for their country.
Just a thought. ;) //
Apologies if I am confused, but I thought the OP was about 'lefties' hating their country - your description seems to fit most of the 'right wing' elements in the country - and possibly on the AB!!

I find the Brits very "sensitive" on the subject of criticising aspects of their country and find it difficult to differentiate between "criticism " and "loathing."
When one critisises an aspect or perhaps more than one aspect of one's country it is often regarded as "loathing" or perhaps "treasonable."
Yes, once, "this Royal Throne of kings, this sceptred Isle" was the "envy of the world......NHS, roads, railways, Welfare State, Judicial system and education, but the rest of the world has caught up.
So when the UK is criticised, take it as constructive criticism and not a treasonable comment from either the left or right of the political spectrum.
