/// But I cannot help observing the grotesque irony that in the capital of Germany this deluded woman should have spoken of how ‘England’s fascistic side’ affected the British view of Germany and World War II. ///

/// She even had the nerve to grumble about being ‘completely brainwashed’ by films she saw in her childhood showing the British ‘being marvellous and beating the Nazis’. ///

You can't get any more anti-British than that.

/// A balanced view from one of the consistent voices of reason on this section. ///

This type of thing is what starts off the slanging matches, by putting this it makes out that it is only the ABers who hold the same views as yourself, voice reason.

There was no reason whatsoever for you to put this, except in your continuous quest at being confrontational.

AOG - //That is the problem with debates, one cannot help turning things into personal attacks ie one person makes a point and then another person opposes that view point, therefore the first person takes that to be a personal attack on themself and their views. //

That's a very even-handed assessment.

But I think if individuals - and I certainly number you and I in this, since we are probably the principle protagonists - can try to remember that we are debating a point, not knocking cyber-lumps out of each other, we can ensure that threads stay on track for a lot longer.

I for one have given thought to my propensity to allow my fingers to run away with me!

I have always typed as I thought, and then hit the 'Submit' button without either thinking, or more importantly re-reading, and assessing potential misunderstanding or offence hidden in my posts.

So I do resolve to keep a tighter rein on my views, and ensure that I am making a contribution, rather than simply rising to provocation, or indeed creating it.

I am sure I can rely on you to adopt the same approach, and the News Section will be better for we two seasoned battlers to keep clear of personal conflict.

Moving on ...
baz.....I have no problem with what you said. It simply popped up at a very convenient time given the post I was about to answer.

Save the spleen for someone else, eh?

Oh dear!

While I was composing my conciliatory message, you were posting this - hopefully you will now read my post, and act on my suggestions.
bazwillrun - //baz's rant"

Funny how when others dont agree or like what they see on here its a rant..same old same old...ill remember that next time i see one of your AH type posts..half a page of nothing that could be said in one line.... //

I am trying hard not to get drawn into personal confrontations - as per my recent post, so please leave me out of your spats with other AB'ers.
Now we have reached the Rubicon on this thread..................

Perhaps after 66 posts, AOG, A-H, Baz and JTH might consider the News section as a whole and desist from posting any further on this thread.
It was a bit of a rant, though, especially as it was factually inaccurate.

I'll agree that I ramble a lot, although I guess I'm just not a very direct person.

I would not dream of speaking for my fellow AB'ers, but I for one have no intention if desisting from posting on this thread!

Thus far it is an interesting debate, and I am going to do my utmost to ensure that it stays that way.

I can hardly do that if I am not participating in it, can I?

/// Seven years ago, I listened to Tony Benn speaking at the Political Tent at Glastonbury Festival, which these days encourages at least as many rich Tories as it does poor Socialists. ///

/// The entire audience sat there in rapt silence, heads nodding, as Mr Benn came out with observation after observation, opinion after opinion, and no-one could possible argue with the utter common-sense and reason that underpinned everything he said on that day. An experience I have never forgotten. ///

The question that must be ask is, who would go to the Glastonbury Festival to sit in a tent so as to listen to a left-wing politician, spouting politics?

A whole group of nodding lefties, perhaps?
O.K.............just a suggestion, one that may solve a lot of problems without diminishing the "enhancement " of the thread.
AOG - //The question that must be ask is, who would go to the Glastonbury Festival to sit in a tent so as to listen to a left-wing politician, spouting politics?

For your education - Glastonbury is a music and arts festival, there are a vast number of different activities and shows going on as well as the mainstream music stages.

One of the great pleasures about the festival is that you can experience things you may not otherwise come across, all within the price of your admission ticket (I am lucky enough to go free though.)

So that meant that I, and I am sure others, who have never heard Tony Benn speak, could spend an hour listening to what he had to say, and in the majority of cases, agreeing with him.

Personally, I was nodding, but I am not a 'leftie' - could you consider that I was not the only person of a different political persuasion who took an opportunity to hear an alternative view point free of charge?

You seem to judge it as slavish 'lefty' worship - I on the other hand saw it as an addition to my education.
Sqad - //O.K.............just a suggestion, one that may solve a lot of problems without diminishing the "enhancement " of the thread//

Understood, but I am not sure how the collective absence of the main contributors to a thread leads to its 'enhancement'.

/// well, let's try some patriotism tests. ///

A true patriot loves one's country, but loath what certain persons have recently done to it.
A-H

\\\\Understood, but I am not sure how the collective absence of the main contributors to a thread leads to its 'enhancement'.\\\\

"Tongue in cheek"..."bit of s smile"...."hint of sarcasm"...........
///A true patriot loves one's country...../// but isn't allowed to make criticism of it?
AOG - //A true patriot loves one's country, but loath what certain persons have recently done to it. //

I would disagree.

A patriot loves one's country - but being a patriot is an absolute, there are no degrees of patriotism in the definition of the term.

Therefore a more accurate view would be - a patriot love's ones country, and some patriots loath what certain persons have recently done to it.

I am not a patriot, but I do loathe what some people have done to the country I live in.

/// WWII was a long time ago, AOG. You can't expect us lefties to flag wave in the hopes of destroying Hitler. It didn't work with Churchill after the war, and he was more eloquent than you! ///

Those were the words of the Mail's columnist Stephen Glover, and not mine.
"A true patriot loves one's country, but loath what certain persons have recently done to it. "

Maybe Emma Thompson loves her country but can't bear what all that cake has done to it :-)

That seems a most sensible approach, just as long as you stick to what you propose, and that you refrain from calling my opposition to what you state as nit-picking.

I also will take on board your criticisms of myself, just as long as they are not fabrications, and that they are delivered in a none pompous, none supercilious fashion.
