For the record, I do not support ALDI on this issue. Any Staff that a supermarket employs should be willing and able to sell anything that the store stocks.
Yes- you have to be able to the job. We had this a few times with carework - there were some female applicants who said they would not be able to give personal care to men, only women. They were told quite clearly at the interview that there may not be a choice- residents get up as and when they want to and they would have to go to whoever needed them. They generally said they didn't want the job at that point. I'm sure they must have been expecting other staff to do that for them, but how would that work with only 2 or 3 staff on if they all said that?
Aldi's store, Aldi's decision.
Here we go again, backing down just to please them.
It may be their decision, it doesn't mean it is the right decision.

I can see they are trying to be flexible to employees' delusions, but in this case there is nothing that compels someone not to sell the product, it is their personal quirk; and customers, who are always right, are being restricted for no good reason.

Aldi should reconsider their well meaning but ridiculous stance. If an employee says they were always incapable of performing the job, either find them a different one, or tell them that Aldi regrets the employee has chosen not to remain with the company. And also check why the job interview didn't find the problem offering unsuitable candidates a job. Perhaps the "take any applicant" policy isn't the best.
If they finished this person & she "Took" them, I doubt she would win this case, I would think under her T/C contract of Employment it must contain what sort of goods they sell, or has that been changed to please a Muslim employee.
" Aldi's store, Aldi's decision."
Maybe so but a pretty stupid decision to put the religious fervour of one member of staff in front of the possibility of losing customers. They (Aldi) are there to serve their customers, the public is there to buy their goods, to let this one person dictate to both sides seems stupid to me.
With an employee like that most Pakistani corner shops would go out of business.
i suppose the catholic working in the pharmacy department is going to refuse to sell condoms now ...
If you don't like it don't shop there!! Simple really!! All this outrage is quite distasteful.
Ezactly
It's very unprofessional. When you are working, you represent the company, not just yourself.
^Exactly^
quite right islay!!!!
Islay, "If you don't like it don't shop there!! "
Do you think that's what Aldi wants?
Just explain that to an Asian shop owner 08.45 answer.
I have no idea what Aldi wants, but then I don't have an issue with their actions! For all those that do just don't darken their doorstep again!
08.54 Answer,
It was one till. How many times do you visit a supermarket and find all the tills open?
Outrage ... Lol
You actually sound more outraged at the response, Islay.

How come some Muslims will serve alcohol and some won't?
Surely there's a hard and fast rule?
