Irrelevant. The public pay tax (in theory) in order to be protected by the police, just as they pay for trash collection or street lighting. This does not mean that the average member of the public understands the current situation of the case or if there is a specific reason for funding it that cannot be put all over the newspapers. Nor can they realistically be expected to.
