I missed the "religious observance trumps social mores" post.

That's the "defence" - under the 2nd Amendment - of the doctors in Minnesota(I think?) charged with performing FGM.
I missed the "religious observance trumps social mores" post.

well it doesnt in the UK - FGM is against the statute law - altho proving it since clearly the parents are compliant, is difficult
Still, if attacking FGM offends some people and threatens "social cohesion" then we should stop attacking it, isn't that the logic?

Mind you, there are quite a few people like me who are offended by savages who mutilate their daughters. Does our "offence" matter?
//altho proving it [FGM} since clearly the parents are compliant, is difficult//

Spoken by Common (or is that "compromised"?) Purpose's star graduate.
Sadiq Khan says attacking it is a hate crime. Yes, as andy-hughes says, religious observance trumps social mores.
Same argument as kept gang rape in Rotherham etc etc under wraps for twenty years.
Yes indeed - and so it continues.

Do you seriously think there is a parallel between my comment and defending FGM?

Seriously???
andy-hughes, which bits of religious observance do you think trumps social mores?
Think I'll make another cup of cocoa.
Naomi - // andy-hughes, which bits of religious observance do you think trumps social mores? //

I think you know, but if you insist on playing devil's advocate, I will spell it out for you -

I am happy for someone to trump social mores with their faith by not shaking hands.

I am unhappy for someone to trump social mores by mutilating a child.

Clear enough for you?
Andy for goodness sake - take no gaum just accept you're
a Doctor from Minnesota and let them carry on all night.
//Same argument [difficult/impossible to prove] as kept gang rape in Rotherham etc etc under wraps for twenty years//

I tell a lie. The only standard of proof required to convict someone having sex with a minor is the child's birth certificate.

(W. H. Stead "scandal" -1880s? - and the subsequent closing of a common defence by raising the legal of consent from twelve to sixteen. But Common Purpose knows all that, doesn't he?
"Social mores" sounds much more genteel than "cultural practices" doesn't?
andy-hughes, //Clear enough for you? //

No. Your defence of religious observance doesn't stop there so that's a teeny weeny bit disingenuous....

Pantomime time again. ;o)
Religious observance, social mores, customs.
How's a poor boy to know?
I expect when you get off the plane in Riyadh, you're given a card with all the do's & don't's printed on it.
Why can't we just print and distribute enough said cards for everyone in the UK.
Possibly prosecute anyone who's caught not carrying one so there's no excuses.
SR ; Perhaps something along the lines of, 'Instructions for American Servicemen in Britain, 1942' (Facsimile version available on Amazon)

In 1942, the United States War Department distributed a handbook to American servicemen that advised them on the peculiarities of the "British, their country, and their ways."

It may require some serious updates though. :0)

I remember it advises them against using the word "bloody" as it is "the strongest swear word the Brits have" !
Ah, colonials, bless them.
