Going into a temple in shorts, that is just a lack of common courtesy, I am surprised at both you and your father in law.
But being you are as open minded as you constantly tell us, I don't think that you would object to a burka wearing Muslim woman being rushed out of one of our cathedrals?

I think it is for me to know, and you to speculate about what I think about religious observance, so I don;t feel especially inclined to de-rail this thread in trying to convince you when your mind is clearly made up already.

We enquired in advance of our trip if there were any dress restrictions for men or ladies, and we were advised that for ladies, bare arms and legs are frowned on, but for gentlemen, there is no dress restriction.

We did attempt to dress in a manner respectful to the temple, but it seems we were given incorrect information.

In my eyes, making a fuss and a stand about being incorrectly advised would have been disrespectful, but because we are not, we adjourned to the outside immediately as requestedner

I would strongly object. God's house is for anyone to visit, and if a burka was inappropriate or not acceptable, I would expect the lady to be quietly advised as such, and asked to leave, and not to be 'rushed' anywhere.

When I've been abroad I've never experienced a problem with wearing shorts but I always have a cardi in my bag to cover my shoulders.

ummm - Exactly - I think most seasoned travellers know that ladies' bare arms and legs are frowned on, and most religious institutions allow men in shorts, with the occasional exception, as we discovered.

I think it depends where you go.

A lot of European countries with regular tourist visitors have a relaxed attitude to dress codes - I think we just lucked out with an over-zealous attendant!

It is perfectly possible to offer offence with no intention whatsoever, a simple error in etiquette, and as you and I know, the correct response is an acknowledgement and an apology.

I have realised something over the last couple of days reading all these threads.
A muslim could throw himself infront of a speeding car to save several people and still end up getting the blame for the car speeding in the first place.
Some people are just not happy unless they are slating Muslims.

£ 3000?! I'm guessing that the hundreds of unfortunate indigenous unemployed will now see that there is a financial benefit to becoming (temporarily of course) a muslim when going for job interviews. If you only got one job out of a hundred you interview for, you still chance getting up to £ 297,000 in your back pocket for the other 99 you didn't- not bad for doing nowt!
