I don’t think it makes sense to talk of an “anti-X” vote. It’s difficult enough sometimes working out why people vote FOR a party, a thankless task often trying to second-guess if or why they voted against.
Nice to see Farage speechless for a change. As it stands it remains the case that no party led by him has ever won a parliamentary seat with anyone other than a sitting Tory who has defected.

The BP of course dont have the benefit of experience, neither have they had the time to garner sufficient data to run for MP, disappointing nonetheless.
I think Nigel needs to take stock, accept they still did very well, and start to work out where and how the Party shapes itself. A MP is entirely different from a MEP or a Councillor; they need to set out where they would like to take the country and how they would do it (Not a Manifesto as they are not worth the paper they are written on), then they need to build up their plan of action - if they want to succeed.

Surprised at this result, Surprised that 7000+ tory voters did not vote brexit. Lib non dems looked to be making a come back so I'm surprised that they didn't pick up a lot more Labour/Tory votes. The major surprise is that the marxist, anti British, extremist, anti semitic, terrorist supporting Labour with an eastern bloc spy at the helm manages to get anyone to vote for it.

They will spin this but the reality is that this was more than a disappointing result for them.

ag, this will be a disappointment for NF and co. This does illustrate that even in a heavily brexit area brexit was not the primary concern of the voters. I saw the Labour candidate interviewed and I think she gave a big clue how this happened. She seemed focused on local issues and if she campaigned on that basis I imagine that trumped brexit in the minds of the local voter. It will be very interesting in this seat in the 2022 GE.
It seems possible to me that many voters were determined this was just to replace a disgraced Labour MP with another Labour MP, without considering the record of the party on the main national issue. Too few had the courage to change their vote in order to support genuine exit from the EU.
From the BP's viewpoint though, this is a blow. Instead of showing that they can be elected, and thus encouraging others to find the nerve to vote for them in the next GE, they show, as the Liberals have tended to for years, that they can come a close second and let some other party in. They need to carefully consider how to turn that image around asap.

As I said above, I am dissappointed, I am also surprised.
Do I think they *should* have won it - actually no. Like I said above for a MP they need to have set their stall out properly if they want to be taken seriously. They cannot go into Parliament on a single issue.

I fear ymb tho that The Brexit Party will come a cropper once they start doing manifesto stuff. They are the ideal repository for a Brexit protest vote and who’s to say they won’t have a big influence on politics for a while. But they’ll only do that as long as there are enough cross Brexit folk willing to vote for them.
Many Tories, esp many of the leadership candidates, will surely say that they’d have won the seat were it not for them, and that is probably (tho not necessarily) true: therefore we need to get on and do Brexit and we’ll get all their votes back.

Local issues won the day but Farage must have seen that coming and would have briefed the BP candidate but ultimately failed.
Complacency perhaps? Given the furore over the previous Labour candidate and the state of the Labour Party itself,this was a bad result for the BP.
Farage will seriously have to think about future strategy and I suspect privately he is very dismayed.

Without the data to work the plan of action it's pointless even uttering the words.
Ich, I think you are correct. But, personally I am not going to vote for anyone with an open agenda. I want to at least have some idea of agenda, I suspect I am not alone in this.
