Jim360 - “The defeat, such as it was, owes more to the leaders of the Remain campaign than it does to the rank-and-file, anyway.” I vehemently disagree. While the leaders of the Remain campaign were, for the most part, doom-mongering, lying catastrophists, it was the rank-and-file 'C' and 'D' list remoaners in the main-stream media that really put the...

oh dear, ladies, come on be pleased for out nation....
I, and my beloved father were so pro “Common Market” in 1975, we planted a tree in the garden at Hepscott, and called it the Europe tree. We voted to join the Common Market. A common market where trade could be done together as, one.

However, the EU has become a place where UNELECTED ((in the main), highly paid bureaucrats look after themselves and live a life of luxury, paid for by us. We have MEPs who are elected, but there are hundreds of their “hangers on” who only look after themselves.

My father and my whole family voted to join the Common Market in 1975 because that’s what we thought it was. Good trade and common goals. We never thought that our courts would be taken over and that Our Legal System would be negated.

Thank God we didn’t take on the Euro.

I’ll be cheering at 23.00.
It must have been horrible to live under subjugation for so long, with the freedom only to live your life as you so chose, have a career of your choosing, vote as you please, travel around an entire continent with no barriers...
Enjoy Tora, the rest of us won't land with as big a bump.
What on Earth do you mean, Jim?
If Enoch were alive today he would be singing a Te Deum of thanksgiving
I'm scared. I want to go back. sob sob
You can still do that Jim, that won't change.
But you will be doing it as a British subject not a Eurosocialist pawn.
I wasn't that, either. And I wasn't claiming you couldn't. I just have contempt for the attitude that we were in any sense part of a tyranny, in any sense subjugated. It demeans the word.
It was indeed horrible to have one's voted in government able to be overruled by an unelected foreign power at any time. As for your other examples, not much changed there, is there.

Happy Independence Day everyone.

chrissa, bang on,BA, I was the same, the common market seemed sensible, what happened later made me hate the EUSSR. I am surprised so many "intelligent" people can't see that.
Contempt for the truth ill befits a scientist :-(
I can sing, JD. Te Deum coming up! (Or would you prefer Elgar's 'A ve Verum' - I sang alto in that last week). Seriously, I can't quite believe it. On my 2nd glass of fizz. Relief settling slowly around my shoulders - but did Boris speak earlier? Genuinely, my main emotion is one of relief and getting ready to square he shoulders for the fight s to come.
Thank the dear Lord that we are out. :)
Great post Chrissa! That's exactly the situation and why most of us who remember what 1974 was about are now celebrating. I am proud to be British, I love Europe. I feel very sorry that the EU has become what it is now. I am so relieved and proud that the majority could see what has happened.
^^^ Couldn't agree with Apc and Chrissa more.
The whole ethos of the Common Market was a good idea
(must have been as the SNP were agin it in 1971)

What we ended up with was pseudo democracy in this country which is wrong, wrong, wrong.

Politics is subjective. It always has been.

We were members of a club we joined willingly, whose rules we agreed to, and again and again endorsed our elected leaders to continue that membership. Until 2016, that was true. We have chosen to leave the Union.

It is not, and it never was, about subjugation. That is my only point. We are not suddenly free this evening, because we were 20 minutes ago too.
