Does he really think that banning flights from the Schengen area is going to limit Covid cases in the USA? Has no-one told him that Covid is no respecter of boundaries? Of course he wouldn't want to include flights from the UK in the ban as that would upset his mate Boris. I despair of his intelligence.

Bless you, spice ;-). Thanks for your withdrawal xx
I'm no fan of Trump but I'd regard banning flights between the Schengen area and the USA as far less 'naive' than his statement only a day earlier: "It will go away, just stay calm, it will go away"
https://metro.co.uk/2020/03/11/donald-trump-tells-people-stay-calm-coronavirus-will-go-away-12380335/

Switching from "it wil go away" to more definite policies (such as limiting international travel) appear to me to be abandoning naivety, rather than continuing to display it.

pixie: yes but if you did that then it means that those that arrive must be put somewhere. You had no answer to that, I said quarantine because that's what it's called when someone arrives and are not allowed in. They have to go somewhere. So when we "shut up shop" as you suggest what do we do with those already in the air? on the way? at any one time there are at least 1m people on the air, many of them on the way to UK what should we do with them when they arrive? what about ships, do we turn them away? Stop digging love!
This does look like either a misinformed or a political move.
I don’t really see what the Schengen area’s lack of border checks has to do with it.
There’s nothing to stop people travelling outside that area and coming to the US anyway
Not long ago the whole thing was grossly overblown, would soon go away and, anyway, the USA doesn't do problems under Trump. And now people and packages/freight from Schengen are apparently banned from entering the USA - and it won't affect trade. That's because (courtesy of a former incumbent) most of the imports come from overseas (but quite a few don't).
I'm not. What's the difference? They wouldn't be allowed on a flight until clear. How many people might be literally in the air at the point? And yes, that may be worth it if they had already left the country but ... but not yet arrived. There is no other option then.
And no, ttt, "quarantine" is not when someone arrives. It means keeping someone isolated until they are no danger.
Pixie. As far as I’m
aware it doesn’t take effect until
Friday night so no one with any sense will be caught out because they’re in transit.
^and that includes the airlines.
Thanks, naomi... x so there we go... totally unnecessary to bring it here.
ok pixie, where would you quarantine them pixie, all the air/sea ports of Britain that started on their way here after you locked it down? It's approx 25,000 based on government figures of 140m arrivals per year.
pixie: "And no, ttt, "quarantine" is not when someone arrives. It means keeping someone isolated until they are no danger. " - that's what it would be in the cases you are talking about.
Ttt... and believe me, as I'm sure you can tell, this is not my expertise, just common sense, and like last time, I am quite prepared to be persuaded I'm wrong.
As naomi has just said, a couple of days notice, and people wouldn't be on the planes. Don't let anyone on, unless they are clear. They would obviously be quarantined in whichever country they were in originally- otherwise there is a risk it would be brought here anyway.
Tough, maybe, but so is people dying here, unnecessarily.
Don't understand your previous post, ttt? That was my point...
"Ttt... and believe me, as I'm sure you can tell, this is not my expertise, just common sense," - no it's uncommon nonsense. Do you think that you alone know what to do and that the entire rest of the world is wrong?
Not at all, ttt...but it would be nice if someone could genuinely explain, why we allowed it here at all. So far, it just seems to be apathy to me. Why is possible for Trump to ban flights in, but not for us to do that originally? These are genuine questions... I appreciate this is not my specialist subject... but I also have not yet got a proper answer from anyone else either...
I totally agree with that.
i wonder how this virus will effect third world countries, id imagine a lot of old and infirm in those countries will die in the thousands.
and a mass run for the hills..i wonder if corona will put migrants off
heading to europe illegally..
to stop it would have been impossible and the measures you suggest would be futilea and 100 times worse than the virus itself, that's why. It's no more dangerous than flu and that kills thousands annually and barely makes the news.
"Why is possible for Trump to ban flights in" - he hasn't he's banned them from Schengen, there is a lot more of the world outside that.
