Does he really think that banning flights from the Schengen area is going to limit Covid cases in the USA? Has no-one told him that Covid is no respecter of boundaries? Of course he wouldn't want to include flights from the UK in the ban as that would upset his mate Boris. I despair of his intelligence.

nothing to do with being mates with Boris - nor is it really that the UK has been specially exempted. the restriction applies to the Schengen Treaty area (which the UK and Ireland are not a part of, and Ireland is exempted too), this is because of the unrestricted nature of travel between participants in the scheme and that once in the Schengen area, anyone can travel anywhere without any sort of check.

Hmmm....I said that Britain should have done this from day one, and was roundly informed it was both impossible and impractical. It makes no sense to allow in people from the UK, as we have it here as well. Either make the effort, or don't.

Pixie - you're absolutely right of course. Why hasn't Trump included the UK and other EU countries who happen not to be in the Schengen area? The fact that my passport is glanced at when I enter France or Spain doesn't make me any less likely to be carrying Covid were I to fly to the USA tomorrow (God forbid that I should ever darken the doors of that nation)

I listened to Trump's announcement live, and was struck by the serious tone he was so clearly trying to convey. This measure is probably the most obvious equivalent of shutting a stable door after the horse has bolted -- the disease has already arrived in the US -- but he was measuring his words carefully, staying on script, and I felt there was something resembling genuine fear in his voice and tone.

I also thought he sounded a little unwell. Wonder if he's OK. Should get himself tested soon.
