I fly a fair bit - correction - I did fly a fair bit before the world went mad, usually at least half a dozen times a year, and I cannot remember the last time my passport wasn't scanned at each end, whether it be by somebody in a booth or self- service, so I think TTT is right.

airlines get fined if they transport people that are not allowed into the destination country. It is in their interests to reduce these fines. Vaccinations are already checked for some destinations even now, how do you think that works 237sj? Perhaps you could outline your knowledge of IT systems that leads you to your beliefs.
of course they do! These days you do it yourself anyway and get a boarding pass. When did you last travel 237sj?
here's the instructions for self check in, for example

so how do you think you are identified by the machine? to the extent that a boarding pass can be issued? They scan the passport on the page that is designed for every machine in every port in the world to read! The machine or the person at the check in desk essentially do the same thing, check id, check valid ticket, check eligibility to fly etc. Gawd elp us!

"Identify Yourself
Walk up to an open kiosk. The kiosk will prompt you to identify yourself by inserting a credit card, typing in your flight confirmation code (locator number) or entering your frequent flyer number. Enter your identifying information using the touch screen. You will be able to touch a “clear” or “backspace” key if you make a mistake"
No mention of having to use a passport...
