Labour’s performance here is irrelevant.
For the reasons stated. This was a protest vote as by-elections often are. Almost certainly N Shropshire will go back to the Tories at the general election when the huge numbers of Tories voters who stayed away yesterday rouse themselves however reluctantly to do that they’ve always done.
The fact also is the Lib Dems cannot win a general election however much you think Labour cannot.
Nobody is expecting the Lib Dems to win the next election
But I guess somebody is sitting up and taking notice of them in view of their other recent by election wins
The current state of the two main parties is assisting a ripe time for others to make gains
Protest vote or not what happens if the electorate protest as much at the next election ?
The government by their actions this time last year have alienated their back benchers and no doubt the public
That is why they cannot impose any lockdown before Xmas because the public would not follow the rules in a tit for tat reprisal
Conditions are perfect right now for the third political party in this country to make headway

Nice to see Ed Davey doing his smug "go back to your constituency and prepare for government" guff. Deluded idiot. Almost as deluded as the Bozo-philes who think he'll still be round in a year. Or even Smarmy who thinks Labour have got a chance in the next election. The Tories under Bozo are woeful but will still win the next election (when it comes).
At general elections people vote for a government. They also vote tactically in many cases
Much as I admire the Lib Dems, who have huge presence in local government, they cannot be party of national government largely because of our voting system.

If the “masters of the universe” party makes that error too, which I’m sure they will not, then that would be very foolish
