I think that the lady was asking where her family originated from. I think that is a genuine question, maybe not the time nor the place but it is hardly a major issue.

Davebro - No-one is suggesting that Lady Hussey's interest in the party guest was not genuine, or appropriate.
The issue arose when she refused to accept the guest's first response to the question about her origin.
Question - where are you from?
Answer - London.
No problem.
Further questions - Where are you really from? Where are 'your people' from?
Rudeness and offence.
Not, as I have pointed out from my first Answer to this one - racism, or an 'attack', simply crass rudeness.

I would agree that Ms Fulani assessment of rudeness as being 'assault' is entirely inappropriate, and dilutes the meaning of that emotive term.
But I maintain that digging for negativity about her does not detract from the cause of this thread.
I remain mistfyed by the apparent desire of some posters to gleefully dig up negative aspects of Ms Fulani's life and career.
It appears to infer that in some way this mitigates what occurred.
It does not, in my view.

"Sistah Space will also use the grant to launch a training programme aimed at giving organisations and individuals a greater awareness of cultural sensitivities and barriers faced by domestic abuse survivors who are of African and Caribbean heritage."
She was hardly giving the LIW a greater awareness was she? She could easily have explained the cultural sensitivities when asked about her heritage.

The role of Lady Hussey was to assist the Queen Consort in welcoming the guests, and making them feel comfortable, given that almost all of them will never have been in the presence of royalty before, and will be nervous and worried about conducting themselves correctly.
As my post at 08.35 points out, Lady Hussey was anything but welcoming and encouraging the guest to relax!

naomi - // Lankeela, that would have been the sensible thing to do. //
And she may have done it, had she not been steamrollered by a rich and privileged old lady intent on securing unnecessary and intrusive heritage information, in advance of anything like courteous conversation.
That's the way with the upper classes - establish the pecking order before anything else.
