//Reuters issued a "kill notice" telling its clients not to publish the picture. The Associated Press (AP) sent out a "photo kill" email accusing the source of the image of "manipulating" the picture....The photo, designed to cool the conversation around the Princess of Wales's recovery, has instead heated all the rumours up again..//

Don't really see the problem in Kate seeking to have the best picture possible to put out there on Mothers day, what mother wouldn't seek the best. I very much doubt a picture of her 10 mins after rolling out of bed would work to well. I went to great trouble on my phone to produce a bus pass shot. :0)
It's clear the pciture was tampered with but *why* will remain a mystery. Also, this isn't a case of choosing the best picture. If it were, then there would be no issues. It's the fact that there are 11 questionable edits to a single picture which drives this story.
It's not nit-picking when you look at a photo and ask "Why is your daughter's hand disappearing into thin air?"
"Who gives a toss on whether the photo was doctored or not? The aim was to show the traditional Mother's Day photo."
The reason why people give a toss is because its publication is fuelling rumours about the duchess' state of health.
The picture wasn't simply a nice Mother's Day photo. It had another job to do - to say "Hey, look - Catherine is on the mend so pipe down with the conspiracy theories".
However, because it's now apparent that the photo was doctored, it itself is being held up as proof that something dodgy is going on.
Publishing the unedited photo would stop all this.
