//Reuters issued a "kill notice" telling its clients not to publish the picture. The Associated Press (AP) sent out a "photo kill" email accusing the source of the image of "manipulating" the picture....The photo, designed to cool the conversation around the Princess of Wales's recovery, has instead heated all the rumours up again..//

It was Kate herself who edited it! https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-68534359

Occurs to me that she might have had enough doctoring for a while.

well, that's exactly what she said she was, an amateur. A storm in a teacup but there's definitely a lesson to be learnt. I wonder how William feels being married to a paparazza.

This has been an utter PR disaster.  Twitter (and no doubt the rest of the internet) has been alive with conspiracy theories - some potentially believable and others which are fanciful in the extreme - since the PoW was admitted to hospital earlier in the year.  Despite the fact that it was said that she would not be back in harness til Easter, theories have continued to be trotted out all over the globe (including the fact that she is actually dead!).  It is entirely possible that she just wanted some privacy and recovery time following a medical procedure.  The fact that this was kept private seems to have fuelled speculation since the press seem to think that she is not entitled to any sort of privacy at all over what might be sensitive medical matters.

This picture was then released.  They normally release a picture of some form or another on Mother's Day, Father's Day etc, so if they hadn't more speculation would have ensued.  So a picture was released with some terrible editing and this has just added to it.  There is an element of damned if they do and damned if they don't.

they could just have released the original, or taken dozens and chosen the one they liked best. But photoshopping it at all was a mistake and doing it amateurishly was a bad mistake. These aren't just happy snaps shared by family, they're off around the whole world.

But like anyone, she probably wanted to improve the pic.  I spent ages a few weeks ago editing a photo that I was going to have printed for my mum.  In the event I never got to finish it, but I can see how things can go wrong - my poor dad ended up looking like he has 2 thumbs on one hand and mum has something growing out of her ear.

I so agree with Barmaid, I feel very sorry for them all at such a difficult time.
I care not one bit what's wrong with Kate, I just hope she's recovering well.

If it was me, I'd dig my heels in and not be pressurised in to telling the world what surgery I'd had.

oh sure, but you're not royalty.

... are you?

Surely that is quite usual for those folks out in the Fens, Barmaid? 😜

Maybe time to go back to getting professional photographers in or just post an amateur photo warts and all.

JtH 🤣🤣, well, now that you mention it......

jno - I cannot possibly comment.  Anyway, I need a little rest now so my surgeon says.....

I suspect they have reasons for disliking professional photographers. They ued to have some in-house, like Snowdon and Lichfield, who could be trusted, but I don't know that there's anyone like that now.

It's really just another way of keeping journalists busy now.

Least important news of the week, and I include some thesp in a pink suit singing live or anything George Galloway might say, ever.

If I take a good photo I will often make some adjustments in Photoshop. Cropping, masking, colour and contrast  changes. Not at all sinister and absolutely normal.

As I see it, the royals are trying to be more accessible, you can't have it both ways. I'd rather they were modernising than stuck in the past, and if modernising means putting out photos which have been adjusted in an amaturist way by Kate, then I think that's great, why not?

Vagus, I believe this photo was put out to reassure some folk that Catherine is doing well, but now we know it's been doctored, it doesn't tell us any such thing, it makes matters worse.

What a huge, unnecessary fuss about a photograph. There are lots of things going on out in the big wide world and all anyone seems concerned about is a Mother's Day photo. Sheesh!

I don't think it does, Barsel, I think it shows them as human. I don't think it's been 'doctored', as you put it, I think it was as has been said...Kate trying in her amateur way, looking at it and deciding to make it as she wanted it. No conspiracy theories, no underlying issues.

Indeed Tilly, a load of fuss about nothing 🙄
