I cant understand her through that mask!! Is there a clip with subtitles?
You all know where I stand with Muslims and the Muslim community; I'll defend everything except Sharia Law and the (allah?)damn veil.

"Mrs Azmi had said she was willing to remove her veil in front of children, but not if male colleagues were present."

What the hell were they gonna do? Grope her or eye her up in front of a load of schoolkids? Get a ******* grip, woman.
Shahid Malik- now there's a man with sense.
I think it is a massive Passive aggressive statement. I'm with Holland on this one!
It's just ludicrous to judge religious items of clothing in a big lump. An adornment in my eyes is simply that - something small that highlights the rest of your clothing, but only highlights your religion. It is little and symbolises whatever you believe in.

Full on dress codes, including facial coverings are not an adornment but a mask. Where do we draw the line with Nun regalia? Weve never gone on one about these in the past. They were never deemed as harmful to females, or, if so, certainly not in the same way as Muslim women who wear extremely similar gear now are being held to be the font of all evil men can inflict on women.

I am neither a nun, nor any other religious clothing wearing type woman, but come on. Stop yelling at people who are basically wearing what nuns have been wearing for donkeys years.
I really don't see why she had to be sacked...

There's no real evidence I can see to suggest that her veil was preventing her from being able to do her job (and to anyone who wants to counter that, please provide some evidence; I'm not interested in assertions).

I think it would be much more important to teach children that these people are a part of our society (whether we like it or not, I might add) - it would certainly be a lot more constructive than just ignorantly ostricising them.

Frankly, I can understand her being a little unpleasant due to the fact that she's just lost her job...
^^^ she was sacked as the children couldn't hear her voice!!! so YES she was sacked as she couldn't do her job properly!!
I said I wasn't interested in assertions. Where is your source? Or evidence? I was under the impression it was because she refused to remove it...

Personally, I could understand her fine in that little clip (though I'll admit the interview didn't got particularly well for her, poor girl.)
Read the BBC article! It's all there! Some people...
Well, according to the Telegraph (I'll link below), 92 per cent of the students were Muslim (or other ethnic minority), and a quarter of the staff were also.

I find it very difficult to believe that she was the only one wearing such a garment (of course if I'm proved wrong, I shall gladly retract my statements and shut up).

are you saying that muslims have better hearing than the rest of us!?!?! Please read the articals S...L...O...W...L...Y!!
SOURCE - BBC NEWS ONLINE !!

Aishah Azmi, 23, was asked to remove the veil after the Church of England school in Dewsbury, West Yorks, said pupils found it hard to understand her.

(you arn'y trying to read this through a veil are you, maybe thats your problem, wait till no blokes are about, take it off and then try reading it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Are Muslims still an ethnic minority? I don't agree with that, also, on the nun situation, I was taught by nuns in full habits, I have yet to see one almost completely cover their face, their head yes, but not the face, did you have a different convent near you nicecupoftea?
I'm saying that they'd probably be used to people wearing veils and the like (or the various type of veil). Not that complicated, really...

As for the BBC article, again, I find it hard to believe that children so well surrounded by Moslems (or other ethnic minorities) weren't used to the veil or that she was the only person wearing one at the school.

According to the telegraph (see link above), which is more recent than the BBC's (so don't tell me it's out-of-date), her legal adviser states that they haven't been given a reason in writing...

By the way, I'm British, white and male (I'm also 16 if you want to know). By the way, are you capable of having a mature debate?

And non-white Britons, according to a recent census make up roughly 11% of the population (source: The Independant, 6/10/06). Note that that is "non-white", so I would say Moslems are a minority, just much more overblown than the others.
Listening to her, how did she get a job teaching youngsters? I'll bet these interviewers get a fippin' good wage and can't even spot a nutter when they see one ; veil or no. Hey, that's another job I could do !
Indeed I am. But you're saying the Telegraph is more reputable than the BBC, which is a preposterous assertion. Still, I suppose I was about as naive at 16.
Literacy has really taken a blow in recent years, if a 16 year old still can't grasp a few basic facts from a website!! As for your assertion that there were others at the school with veils on, where is YOUR evidence!! Of course there are not as they would have been sacked to. And don't you think the sacked woman MIGHT have mentioned it to!! ha ha ha ha ha
we live in a society where covering the face with a veil, or balaclava for that matter, is deemed inappropriate in everyday situations. Take it or leave it.

Why should anybody be allowed to promote any religion in a professional environment? Whilst at work you observe professional etiquette and social/religious neutrality. If everyone came to work with thier respective religious props - tensions are bound to arise.
I think I've said this elsewhere, but it's worth repeating; you don't need to flash your religion about anymore than I need to flash my penis. You don't need to force your views across...except on here of course.
Ah, NH, I wasn't so much referring to you as admarlow...

I'm not placing the Telegraph above the BBC generally, but their article seems a little clearer on this individual issue.
