I can’t find the thread I saw fleetingly earlier where Theland said that Genesis 6 confuses him but that a Christian apologist(?) had explained the content. I assume Theland means the first part of the chapter which is, indeed, curious, so here you are Theland, a special thread.

// And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,

2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.

3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.

4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.//

What was his explanation?

Over to you - and to anyone else who would like to have a little ponder on it.

I am sure that the non-believers who post in response to such threads will leap on the 'giants' reference, but I am equally sure that in the allegories and parables and metaphors that virtually construct the bible, that it does not refer to men who are fifteen feet tall - maybe it means people of greater intelligence - ?

As an atheist I am happily spared from the tedious task of trying to figure out what it all means.

Ahhh, thanks Mamyalynne. I've been searching for it in R&S. Still, never mind. It's a worthy topic for discussion here.
I've never been a fan of their music, Collins was much better when he went on his own.
Mind you, the 6th album was probably the pick of their early work.
So we'll end with a whistle and end with a bang
And all of us fit in our places
Genesis - for strength . . . but then 6 can make me wobbly at the knees.
Something strange going on here; nailit is reading the bible from cover to cover & naomi is now quoting long passages from Genesis.

It seems the atheists are spending more time reading the good book than the religious!

Well all that matters is you are all doing so, not why.

Keep it up!

Don’t get excited, khandro. Some of us have more than one string to our bow.
naomi, I've just knocked off this portrait of you (from imagination), I hope you like it :0)

I too would be interested in an explanation of this chapter. (Any explanation that makes sense that is) Ive heard various explanations, the most popular being that ''The sons of God'' were fallen angels who mated with human females and produced Nephilim (Giants).
However...
//There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that//
makes no sense if they were all supposedly wiped out by Noah's flood (they crop up again, post deluge, inhabiting Canaan).
The fallen angels appear to be a randy lot if this is the case.
Never received an explanation though of how exactly a spirit being can produce DNA (via sperm) and impregnate a woman!
//It seems the atheists are spending more time reading the good book than the religious!//
Which is exactly why we are atheists Khandro!
Bible writers clearly did a lot of weed.
//Bible writers clearly did a lot of weed//
According to the creation account God DID give every seed baring plant to man :-)
Genesis 6 is set during a period of greatly increasing evil and wickedness on Earth. The fallen angels (demons) eg those who rebelled in Heaven and were kicked out saw their chance to have sex with women and generally mess up the human race.
The offspring produced by these encounters were evidently giants, and this is referenced elsewhere in the Bible, in Job.
Probably why God had to almost wipe out humans in the Flood to preserve the uniqueness of the human species
//The fallen angels (demons) eg those who rebelled in Heaven and were kicked out saw their chance to have sex with women//
How did that happen then? Do spiritual beings have a physical penis?
(According to Jesus, angels...fallen or otherwise...are sexless anyway)

//The offspring produced by these encounters were evidently giants, and this is referenced elsewhere in the Bible, in Job//
So they wernt wiped out in Noah's flood then?

//Probably why God had to almost wipe out humans in the Flood to preserve the uniqueness of the human species//
And what about the uniqueness of animals? Were there giant/demon animals too? What had the animals done to deserve such torture as drowning?
Are there any fallen angels with a womb instead of a penis?
i think when Job refers to the Leviathan he is referring to this pre Flood time.
The fact that God took such a severe measure as the Flood shows us the seriousness of sin. Next time in wont be a flood it will be fire
God!
I see that you have chosen to ignore my questions fiveleaves and have instead resorted to more inane religious ramblings...
