Although I 've computers for many years I have never seen the point of using a browser. Whenever I switch on I go straight to Google to find what I want, so what is the point of browsers.

When I open my browser it automatically opens 7 tabs including Answerbank, a news site, my webmail, my own forum, Twitter AND a google search box :)

Do you just mean the browser icon, or the browser itself? If you mean the Icon, then fine, delete that. If you mean the entire Browser... Then you seriously need it. Good look getting rid of it.
If you don't think that you are using a browser then go to the Control Panel, click on the Programs option, then Programs and Features, and Turn Windows Features On And Off. A short way down the list you will see an entry for Internet Explorer; untick the box (and reboot your computer if necessary). You will then find that clicking on your desktop icon won't work. That should prove to you that you ARE using a browser to view webpages.

P.S. if you do that then make sure that you take a note of what you have done because you won't be able to get back on the internet to find out how to turn it back on again.

(This all assumes that you are using IE but judging by what you've posted it seems unlikely that you have installed another browser)
Modeller, it is a browser that is taking you to Google! Google is not accessible without a browser to take you to their web site.

For God's sake I KNOW what browser I'm using. it's IE at the moment but that's not the question. It could be any browser ! I just don't need to go into them to get to Google.
SORRY FOR SHOUTING BUT !
I KNOW WHAT BROWSERS AND SEARCH ENGINES DO.

My question and answers I think have made it clear . Once the computer is running , I can access Google within seconds so why should I go into a browser first ? T
You have to - if you didn't click on the IE icon, you wouldn't be on the www, you wouldn't go straight to Google. You have to click on some sort of browser to take you to your chosen home web page.
You have chosen Google as the page to open when you start your browser I presume.
Ah... I think I see.
When you hit the Google icon IE opens as your browser and takes you directly to Google as your Homepage. Yep. That's the way it works.
I use a speeddial of 35 sites (definitely does not include google) as the home page / new tab for my browser so there is no one site that I go to directly.
This is the best thread, ever.
Google is obviously set up as your home page so when you "go on the internet" it immediately goes to google
I used to think I was computer illiterate - but now I'm not so sure. I like this thread.

If I might use an analogy . When I get into the car I turn the engine on but once it is on I can drive all day , without tuning it on again .

When I boot up the computer , the browser activates, Google automatically , I then use it all day without ever going into the browser at any time. , hence my question , unless a browser does something else
what is the point . Q
So when you start your PC it opens a browser automatically, so no, you dont need to open another browser, it is already opened and in use.

So you are using a browser to go to Google.
So to use your analogy are you saying 'what's the point of an engine in a car'?
Hello and welcome to another episode of "I'm wrong but I just can't admit it"
//When I boot up the computer , the browser activates, Google automatically// The browser takes you to the Google web site, nothing more, It doesnt "activate" Google, apart from opens the Google web site.
I can't decide if it's terminology or use of English that is the problem so I give up.
No Factor, What he is saying is "why do I need an engine in my car because the engine is already in my car"
No I think he's saying once I've started my car why can't I take the key out as I won't need it again..
