Although I 've computers for many years I have never seen the point of using a browser. Whenever I switch on I go straight to Google to find what I want, so what is the point of browsers.

When I open my browser it automatically opens 7 tabs including Answerbank, a news site, my webmail, my own forum, Twitter AND a google search box :)

Beyond my area of expertise -- but I don't see why not in principle. Even so that's a future development at best and doesn't apply at the moment. And while I don't use many sites, not all of them have apps and a few of them are one-time visits anyway.
that's true of me and I expect of most people. But like Eddie I had also read that browser makers were nervous of where the increasing use of portable devices might lead.
I hadn't read that, but now that I've heard it I'm not too surprised. It's possibly more of a long-term worry, though -- still plenty of use of Browsers at the moment so far as I am aware.
Were it really a question about the home page rather than the broswer as stated, then it is worth noting you can make Google your home page anyway.
Many apps on my smart phone and tablet such as BBC News open in a browser, including the Google app.
An ap must either have the ability to connect and exchange data with the Net (which is basically what a browser does) or use an existing one you have loaded. Most probably the former, in which case the ap is a browser of sorts plus other stuff too ?

Can't see why browser makers would care. There will 'always' be a call for a general purpose surfing application.
browser makers remember IBM. People will always want computers the size of a room. And why on earth would anyone try to make money out of a search function?

Thanks for the answers.
Most Smart Phones have Browsers. Read para 2 in following link :-

wow - haha!
modeller, just accept that you got mixed up - trying to back track and claim you said something else, when its all there for us to see, is just digging you deeper.

you clearly thought that google could work independently of a browser - not realising that google is just a website like any other, and not some separate entity.
you did not realise that the icon on your desktop is just a shortcut - a link - it is not the site itself, and that it is a link to a browser - and google - combined.

there's nothing wrong with that - we are not all computer savvy and we can't just 'know' things, we have to learn them - and some things are confusing - and that's what this site is for.

Well said Joko!
Joko, if I could give you 'best answer' I would. Very well said.
nice one, joko :-)

joko Thanks for your answer but I've only just come back to it.
I thought this thread was finished but I hadn't realised you were telepathic.
//you clearly thought that google could work independently of a browser -
//you did not realise that the icon on your desktop is just a shortcut -//

I suggest you read what I wrote . ##The icon is a short cut , that's its purpose. # Ah but you don't need to read it with your telepathic powers.

However I do agree the OP was ambiguous, I've already said that ,
especially the words # so what is the point of browsers#. That sent several ABers off on the wrong track.

I liked your final comment.
//there's nothing wrong with that - we are not all computer savvy and we can't just 'know' things, we have to learn them - and some things are confusing - and that's what this site is for. //
Unfortunately many of the answers didn't live up to the spirit of it. Silly, trying to be clever, sarcastic remarks, never answers a question.

On the good side it did broaden the thread and the OP was finally answered
Many thanks !
PS. I do agree my computer savviness is rather dated . I use to program and build robots but that was 15 years ago. My work on graphics since then has also been limited to company presentations and wed page design
but that was also several years back.
modeller; I didn't know the difference before this thread either, so I'm pleased you raised it.
modeller....Why don't you just admit that your OP was not just ambiguous, it was absolutely ridiculous....... "I have never seen the point of using a browser. Whenever I switch on I go straight to Google to find what I want, so what is the point of browsers."

Chuck's opening response to your question should have ended all this nonsense.

Al.

its only nonsense if you know everything.

Alson What a charming fellow you are. I bet your colleagues love you.

He thinks he does . No attempt at answering the question but prefers to make disparaging remarks. Maybe it's his way of getting some pleasure in his life.

khandro . I don't think you are alone.

Alston I ve misspelt your name . Grab the opportunity to say something clever.
modeller....Trying to discuss this matter with you is like playing chess with a lunatic. There was no need for anyone to comment beyond Chuck's opening reply to this thread.

If you are positive that it is pointless to use a browser then remove whatever you have from your computer and then try contacting AB, and/or any other Internet sites.

Al.
Alston, not a very nice comment to make when people come on here for advice.
New comers especially may not want to post if they read comments like that.
