holiday entitlement

my place of work closes for about 2 weeks at xmas, and i have been told i have to use some of my holiday entitlement for it. is this right?

no, i know that, but it's just bit rubbish that it only gives me 2 weeks to use for the rest of the year. thanks smartarse
hotpink- yes sadly they can do this. One of my previous jobs operated this way, and no matter how much I argued that it wasn't my fault that the place was closed, so why should i use my holiday entitlements towards it? I and everyone, else didn't get away with it.

Yes, of course its right. There would be little point in you turning up for work over the Christmas period if there's very little work to do.

Alternatively, you could take all your holidays in the summer and be laid off over the Christmas period, but you may find you're a lot worse off.
i think bedbobs and twenty are missing the point here. Hotpink is asking why she should use her holidays up when it's not of her doing why her firm is taking a holiday.
It is the usual policy for companies to shut over Christmas. Is it 2 weeks or more the usual 10 days?

Don't forget some are bank holidays, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day. That is 3 not countable out of your holiday entitlement.

you should work in retail, you get Christmas day off.
I work for a local authority and we are given the option of working if we wish to do so over the Christmas period, so that employees who don't wish to use their leave up over don't have to.
