Flakey Scalp

Ive never suffered from any kind of skin condition, in fact Im actually blessed with smooth soft skin but as of late (past 3months+) the front section of my scalp is covered in white flakes.  Its the secetion where my fringe meets my hair.  Now I find that my entire parting is full of flakes and Im having to pull my hair back into a ponytail to discuise this.  Ive never suffered from dandruff so I have no idea what it actually looks like in comparrison. Could it be my shampoo? Are there any shampoos that clean the scalp as well as the hair that smell nice? How long should you rinse shampoo out for? Where did it all go wrong!!! ;-D

Try T-Gel anti dandruff, smells nice in a 'medical' sort of way, and works well too. Rince untill you think youve done enough, then do it some more!

i would go to the doctor as if its psoriasis then he can give you some dovonex scalp lotion its not greasy or smelly and you just squirt it on your scalp after washing your hair ..he may also give you some shampoo..and you will soon be cured..it might be that or dandruff so perhaps its best to find out..

WOW Id never have even thought about stress being a cause. I am wound quite tight at the moment and have been told to relax by my best mate (shes a beauty therapist and gave me a massage over the weekend) so I guess Ill just have to chill out a bit more.

Thanks, Ill give the shampoos and relaxation a try but on another note my mum suffers psoraiasis could it be hyredatory (sp)?

Erm, Boobesque I guess it itches a little but not heaps Im to scared to scratch it incase i transfer the flakes around my hair.

Toothfairy not saying you don't but are throughly washing your shampoo out afterwards? Or conditioner for that matter, i know a couple of years ago this happened to me and someone mentioned this and i made sure i throughly rinsed afterwards and never got anything after that. Also if you wash your hair in the bath it won't rinse properly.

i have been using the same shampoo and conditioner for a while and it started to not really work as well, didn't get to the flakes point but when i scratched my scalp you could see dead skin under my nails (sorry i know this is a bit gross).  So I changed and bought some sunsilk stuff after getting a free sample in a magazine and liking it.  Bad move, it so didn't clean my hair properly (probably because it was the anti-itch one), and i got loads of flakes, like you i was a bit shocked as I've never had dandruff.  Anyway the next day I went back to boots and got the 2nd cheapest stuff I could get my hands on (75p, nice), I just wanted something really plain to wash it all out, and it really did the trick, no more flakes or excess skin on the scalp..

So maybe try changing your shampoo, or if you haven't changed for a while, use a different one for a while and see if it washes the residue out. Oh and do 2 shampoos for a while and give your head a good old scrub too.

Regular use of 2-in-1 shampoos can particularly contribute to this drying/residue effect.

Selsun, from chemists, good for dandruff but can smell a bit chemicalish

Cheers guys, Ive put off washing my hair this morning as Im off shopping tomorrow n was gonna wait for a few suggestions on what shampoo to buy. morg_monster I have been using the samw shampoo for quite some time now so Im gonna chuck it tonight me thinks!

I suffered for quite a while with an itchy flakey scalp a couple of years ago.  I tried loads of different shampoos that claimed to clear the condition (T-Gel and the likes) - nothing worked until I tried 2 in 1 Head and Shoulders.  After a few daily washes I was clear and have used it ever since.  A couple of times since I figured it wouldn't come back, and changed shampoos but it did.  May be worth a try if nothing else works.

PS: It wasn't dandruff, definitely psoriasis confirmed by my doc.
