Slugs in the kitchen

A friend of mine recently moved in to quite an old rented house, and there are a few slugs coming in to the kitchen downstairs. Are there any simple ways to deter them? I think she would rather not go...

Does Miracle grow actually work? Is it true that it doubles the size of plants, compared to that of just plain water? There seems to be many different forms such as tablets, liquid, and even compost....
