Yes, true - children do end up in hospital, and children do go to see their GP, but they will be in the company of a parent or guardian. And in any case, think of the practicalities.

A little girl who’s family hail from Burkina Faso taken to hospital after suffering an asthma attack. The doctor would have to take the child away for a vaginal examination. What if the parent or guardian objects?

What if the girl in question is from a family who don’t agree with FGM and wouldn’t subject their child to it?

How would it work?

A vaginal examination isn’t required to detect FGM and a doctor’s services aren’t necessary. A nurse could do the job just as well.

FGM is not exclusively a Muslim practice (those of us who remember the Mau Mau insurgency in Kenya will know that it's a Kikuyu custom also), but it is mainly so. ummmm, the procedures are different by virtue of the differences between the sexes (the female one involving more flesh and, arguably, greater horror) but surely you are not suggesting that mutilating a male child is in principle any different from mutilating (usually) an older female child ?
